Ken Starr and Alan Dershowitz Battle Donald Trump for Silliest Republican of the Week

Testifying at the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, Ken Starr, who led the case for the impeachment of President Bill Clinton for lying about his sex life, complained that “we are living in what I think can aptly be described as the age of impeachment.” What was most impressive was that Starr maintained a straight face throughout his presentation. It looked like Starr would dethrone Trump for the title of Silliest Republican of the Week, but Trump fought back within 24 hours.

With a face as straight as Ken Starr’s, Trump asked Palestinians to adopt laws “protecting against financial and political corruption.” He did this while standing next to Benjamin Netanyahu, who, that same day, had been indicted on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust in three different cases of corruption.

However, the very next day, at the impeachment trial, Alan Dershowitz contended that if a U.S. president thinks that his reelection is in the national interest, nothing he says or does can be considered an impeachable offense. He said, “If a president does something which he believes will help him get elected in the public interest, that cannot be the kind of quid pro quo that results in impeachment.” He added that a president could say, “’I want to be elected. I think I’m a great president. I think I’m the greatest president there ever was. If I’m not elected the national interest will suffer greatly.’ That cannot be impeachable.”

AllGov’s award council huddled about this difficult decision. Finally, AllGov spokesperson Sidney Finster announced that Dershowitz’s statement was too ridiculous to qualify for the Silly award. Instead, Dershowitz was nominated for AllGov’s  Most Ridiculous Argument by a Member of Either Party.

In the end, Trump successfully defended his title as Silliest Republican of the Week.

If this wasn’t so horrifying, it might be funny, beyond ridiculous! But it is truly terrifying to watch our democracy slipping away in the hands of this evil dictator. Bad things are ahead if we can’t buck this!
