One sentence in the new stimulus bill (aka the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009”) reads, “For an additional amount for ‘Defense Environmental Cleanup,’ $5,127,000,000.” Five billion dollars is a lot of money to spend without explaining where it’s going. Presumably, this is meant for cleanup at nuclear power and nuclear weapons sites, although the details are not known. There are several federal government agencies that deal with the dangerous mess left behind by nuclear weapons production and testing. Among them are: the Office of Environmental Management, which already spends more than $5.5 billion a year to oversee the leftover toxic waste and contamination from the Cold War period; the Office of Legacy Management, which oversees nuclear weapons sites that have already been cleaned; the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management, which is responsible for disposing of the nation’s civilian and military nuclear waste and spent nuclear fuel, and the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board, which monitors the cleanup of defense nuclear facilities for the Department of Energy.
