Name: Boardman, Joseph
Current Position: Previous Administrator

A native of New York, Joseph H. Boardman served as the eleventh Federal Railroad Administrator from April 2005 until November 26, 2008. Boardman first served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War before earning his Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture economics from Cornell University and a Master of Science degree in management science from SUNY Binghamton. 

 
Boardman served as commissioner of public transportation in Broome County, New York, and then as chief operating officer of Progressive Transportation Services, Inc. He moved on to the New York Department of Transportation as first deputy commissioner and as assistant commissioner for the Office of Public Transportation. He then became commissioner of the Department of Transportation from July 1997 to April 2005.    
 
Boardman has served as chairman of the Executive Committee of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) and chair of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ (AASHTO) Standing Committee on Rail Transportation (SCORT).
 
After leaving the FRA, Boardman became president and CEO of Amtrak.
