Current Position: Ambassador

A longtime diplomat and cabinet official, Alfredo Vicente Chiaradia became ambassador of Argentina to the United States in December 2010.

 
Born on February 15, 1945, in Bahía Blanca, Chiaradia received his master’s degree in political economy from the Universidad de Buenos Aires in 1968.
 
He began his career as a professor of economic theory at the Universidad Argentina de la Empresa. During this time he attended the Argentine Foreign Service Institute (1971-1972) and joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1973.
 
For the next 15 years, Chiaradia served in embassies in Canada, Germany and the United States, where he specialized in economic issues.
 
He returned to Argentina in 1987 to serve as secretary of international economic relations.
 
From 1988 to 1989, he was chief of cabinet to the minister of foreign affairs.
 
Chiaradia returned to the U.S. in 1989 to serve as deputy permanent representative to the United Nations in New York.
 
He was posted to Frankfurt, Germany, from 1993 to 1994 to be consul general and director of the Center for Argentine Promotion.
 
Chiaradia’s other assignments during the 1990s included being chief of cabinet to the secretary of international economic relations (1994), undersecretary for international economic negotiations (1994-1996) and undersecretary for Latin American affairs (1996-1999).
 
His first ambassadorship was to Japan (1999-2001), before serving as Argentina’s foreign trade representative (2001), undersecretary for international trade (2002) and his country’s permanent representative to international organizations in Geneva and to the World Trade Organization (2002-2004).
 
From 2004 until taking over as ambassador to the U.S., Chiaradia served as secretary of trade and international economic relations.
 
He is married and has four children.
