Name: Fahmy, Nabil
Current Position: Ambassador
Born to Egyptian parents in New York in 1951, Nabil Fahmy is a career diplomat, and has held a number of other government posts. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Physics/Mathematics and his Master of Arts in Management from the American University in Cairo.
 
Fahmy was Advisor in the Cabinet of the Vice President of Egypt and a member of the Cabinet of the Secretary of the President for External Communications from 1974 to 1976. In 1986 he was elected Vice Chairman of the UN’s First Committee on Disarmament and International Security Affairs. He headed the Egyptian delegation to the Multilateral Working Group on Regional Security and Arms Control emanating from the Madrid Peace Conference in 1991, and to the Middle East Peace Process Steering Committee in 1993. He was Chairman of the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board of Disarmament Matters in 2001.
 
From 1993 to 1997 he was Political Advisor to the Egyptian Foreign Minister, and from 1997 to 1999, served as Egypt’s Ambassador to Japan. Fahmy was appointed Ambassador to the U.S. in 1999, a position he will be leaving in summer 2008.
