Miriam “Mimi” Hughes presented her credentials as U.S. ambassador to Micronesia in September 2007. Originally from New York City (Manhattan), Hughes now keeps her permanent residency in Florida. She received her bachelor’s degree from Barnard College of Columbia University and her master’s from Washington University in St. Louis. Before joining the Foreign Service, she worked for United Press International.  Within the Foreign Service she held diplomatic postings in the United Kingdom, Thailand, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic. She was Principal Officer of the US Consulate General in Greece and served as the US Consulate General in Mexico City. Then she served in the State Department’s Bureau of International Organization Affairs as Director of the Office of Policy, Public, and Congressional Affairs. Most recently, Hughes was the Deputy U.S. Representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council. Hughes speaks Spanish and Greek.
