Name: Idrissov, Erlan
Current Position: Previous Ambassador

Erlan A. Idrissov has served as Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to the United States since July 4, 2007. He also serves as ambassador to Brazil with residence in Washington DC.

 
He studied English and Urdu at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in the international economic relations department from 1976 to 1981. 
 
From 1981-1985, Idrissov worked in Pakistan, “Tyazhpromexport” State Committee on Economic Cooperation of the USSR, and from 1985 to 1990, he worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Kazakh SSR.
 
From 1990 to 1992, he studied Hindi and French at the MFA of the USSR, Diplomatic Academy, in the international relations department.
 
Idrissov was first secretary of the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan to the UN from 1992 to 1995, and head of the America Department; ambassador-at-large at the MFA of Kazakhstan from 1995 to 1996.
 
From 1996-1997, Idrissov was Assistant to the President of Kazakhstan on international issues. In January 1997, he was made First Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan.
 
In October 1999, he became Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, and was ambassador to the United Kingdom from 2002 to 2007, as well as ambassador to the Kingdom of Norway, Kingdom of Sweden and Ireland with residence in London.
