Jonathan Moore arrived in Belarus on July 25, 2006 to serve as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Minsk.  As a result of the departure of Ambassador Karen B. Stewart on March 12, 2008, Moore became the Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the United States in Belarus. Moore joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 1990 and was first assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade.  He was a desk officer for the former Yugoslavia in the State Department from 1993 to 1995, and was the Political/Economic Section Chief of the U.S. Embassy in Vilnius, Lithuania from 1995 to 1999.  After a one-year assignment as a Congressional Fellow in the Policy Office of Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-IL), Moore was the Deputy Director of the State Department’s Office of Russian Affairs from 2000 until 2002, serving also as that office’s Acting Director for several months in early 2002.  He then worked as Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy in Windhoek, Namibia, from 2002 to 2005.  Until his most recent assignment, Moore was a 2005-2006 National Security Affairs Fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution. Moore speaks Serbian, Lithuanian, Russian, German, and Danish, and is studying Belarusian. According to the opensecrets website, in December 2007 Moore donated $250 to Republican congressman Mark Kirk, whom Moore may have met when both worked for the State Department in the early 1990s, and $500 to Democratic Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama.
