Name: Orazov, Meret
Current Position: Ambassador

A scientist and long-time government official, Meret Bayramovich Orazov has served as Turkmenistan’s ambassador to the United States since February 2001. He began his government involvement during the period when Turkmenistan was part of the Soviet Union and continued through the eccentric dictatorship of Saparmurat Niyazov, who died in 2006.

 
Orazov was born in 1951. He holds a degree of doctor in physico-mathematical sciences from Moscow State University (1983).
 
From 1983 to 1992, Orazov held a number of leading posts in the government; from 1991-1992 he was vice-premier of Turkmenistan..He was minister of Foreign Economic Relations from 1995-1997.
 
Orazov was also active in academia. He was president of Turkmen Economic University from 1987 to 1991 and president of Turkmen State University from 1992 until 2001.
 
In 1992, Orazov received a PhD in economics from Saint-Petersburg University of Economy and Finance.
 
In 1998, Orazov founded a program between Texas A&M University’s faculty of business and management and Magtymguly Turkmen State University. He also worked with the European Union to establish in-service training for personnel in the areas of economics and management.
 
According to his official biography, Orazov has published more than 120 scientific papers in mathematics and economics, as well as five treatises on economics.
 
Orazov is married and has three children.
