Current Position: Ambassador

Ferenc Somogyi serves as Hungary’s ambassador to the United States. He was appointed in August 29, 2007. Somogyi holds degrees in international relations from the University of Economics and the College for Political Sciences in Budapest, as well as a doctoral degree in world economics from the University of Economics.

 
He served as attaché at the embassy in Burma (1969-71), second secretary at the Hungarian Embassy in Nigeria (1971-73), senior desk officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1973-80), deputy permanent representative to the United Nations in New York (1980-84), head of the Department for Multilateral and Global Issues (1984-89), and state secretary (1989-90).
 
During the 1990s, Somogyi was a former businessman, managing Magyar Telekom, and member of the Hungarian Socialist Party. In addition, Somogyi has served as professional state secretary (1994-96; 1990-91), faculty director for the College of Foreign Trade in Budapest (1992-94), chairman of Exportguarantie Ltd. (1992-94), state secretary for Euro-Atlantic integration (1996-98), director of Euro-Atlantic integration for Matáv Hungarian Telecommunications (1998-2001) and chief executive officer of Stonebridge Communications in Macedonia (2001-04).
 
He served as foreign minister from November 1, 2004 until June 2006.
